72 hour film shootout

friday 8pm, a theme is announced and each team (i think, about 30 each year) has basically the weekend
to write a script, produce, shoot, edit… make a five-minute film based on that theme.

thursday afternoon, my boston plans were kind of flimsy and i had a sudden itch to make a movie
so i mass-texted the crew to see if they were down.

first year we did it, we landed 3rd place, second year 2nd.
so the natural progression would be to aim for 1st,
but i knew to win, we had to have heart.

during friday night’s brainstorming session,
tony came up with a really sweet, thoughtful screenplay idea;
henry and rain just needed to fill in the blanks with their snarky, comedic voice.

but saturday morning, i was given nothing i asked for – sunshine, heart.

instead, i got a cop comedy with four dudes, a whole lot of swearing and rain’s cave as a backdrop.
so we nixed the idea of trying to win, said fuck it and decided our new goal was to just make people laugh.

trying to take on three roles (director, cinematographer, editor) wasn’t the brightest decision.
not exactly the film i wanted to make, but it is what it is. 72 hours.

and as much as i wanted to kill rain on monday,
making things makes me happiest,
especially when i get to do it with my friends.

new york asian american international film festival (wow that’s a mouthful).
we were nominated for best director, won best screenplay and placed fourth.
not too shabby at all. :) i was just happy we got to make people laugh.

rain uploaded the short to his youtube here.

we made a film

the 72 hour film shootout is a nationwide competition organized by aafilmlab
where filmmaking teams have 72 hours to write, shoot, edit and produce short films
up to five minutes in length on a common theme.

this year’s theme was “a first goodbye.”

for 56 grueling hours, we sweat, bled and made “cold war”:
